I’m very excited to announce one of my portraits of this fantastic fellow has been chosen as a finalist in the Duo Magazine Percival Photographic Portrait Prize. Please come along and check out the exhibition at Pinnacles Gallery from 16th May – 13th July.
Meet Mr Barry Millard – aka “Shorty”. With over 200,000 residents in Townsville sometimes it’s nice to get to know a stranger, which is where the inspiration for this portrait came from.
Shorty is 73 years old and has been a resident in Townsville for over 60 years. Walking into his quaint Mount Louisa home I soon realise he is an avid collector of all the wonderful memorabilia that the 1950s and 60s had to offer. There were walls of nostalgia overflowing with collectables – from Marilyn Monroe to Elvis Presley – the worlds greatest superstars of that era have been forever immortalised in Shorty’s home. Shelves and cabinets were bustling with vintage coke bottles, vinyl music records, old radios and even an original hot dog machine! All of this plus his sage green 1964 Ford Fairlane are his pride and joy. Shorty can enjoy a beer with his mates in his own home bar where many stories and yarns are told – no doubt about his myriad of jobs he has had in his life. “I’ve done just about everything” Shorty says.
In today’s modern society where we favour our technology for communication it’s important to remember that even the stranger in the street has a story, you just have to ask.
